About Stacey

We're a Texas couple who love modern design and architecture. We're renovating our mid century modern home room by room, inch by inch and we're doing it all ourselves.

Just a quick update and a photo dump from my camera, as I do great when it comes to taking pictures of our progress but not so great at actually doing anything with them.
Since I haven’t updated in weeks, I’m long overdue.  I’ll explain what’s been going on in my life the last few weeks in another post… but I’m too tired to even go there.  More on that later.

I did get the storage cabinet painted and the door to match.  I decided to leave a stained wood trim around the edge so the sliders could move more easily.  Paint would have probably made them stick and would have eventually started to come off.  I love the look of mixed finishes anyway.  A little tape helped me “pull it off”.

storagetaped

I’m loving the color decision.  After failing the first time with a color I ended up using Benjamin Moore – Water’s Edge

storage1storage2

My first choice (below) was really pretty in the can and super fab in real life… but it clashed with the gray trim color and was just too much… too much… of something.  It was was too harsh on the eyes and really stuck out like a sore thumb.  I hated it.  That’s the great thing about paint.  There’s always another color waiting to go over it.

storage-color1

When it came to putting knobs on the sliders I turned to one of our many racks of “cool stuff”.  We’ve been gathering up junk for years that we knew we would someday use, and its always amazing what I can find in our stash.

junktrays

Richie has been picking up old knobs from mid-century furniture for years so I had several to choose from.

knobs

So once I was happy with the color, the old door also got painted to match. I really love wood doors in a house but the laminate was all chipped and the door was in pretty rough shape.  I patched and repaired, sanding and cleaned, and painted that sucker.  It was worth it because it’s a solid door (not hollow core) so I really couldn’t bring myself to throw it out or replace it.  Seemed silly to me.

door-before

The hardware on this door was GORGEOUS!  I carefully removed it before I painted.
The hinges on the other hand were hideous.  For the life of me I cannot understand why people paint over hinges and hardware.  I’m a stickler for details and that just seems lazy to me.
Check out how nasty the were.  When “someone” stained the doors they just stained right over the
hinges.  TERRIBLE!

hinges-dirty

So I put them in a pot and boiled them until the gook just melted right off.  It’s a great way to clean old hardware without having to use harsh chemicals or buy new ones.

hinges-boiling

Richie asked me what was for dinner and I became unhinged!  :-)

The door gets painted, and the hardware goes back on…..

doorpainting

I love the hardware.  It makes me all warm and fuzzy!  Honestly, I only bought this house for this door knob.  (lol)  When I look at this picture I’m totally happy with the color choice.  It definitely works with the gray trim.

I’m trying to ignore the floor but it’s SO HARD TO DO!  It’s just yucky!  I know we’ll get to it eventually but it does drive me crazy.  And that’s pretty much where I have stopped on my work in this room.  After I painted the door and cabinet all hell broke lose at my real job and I haven’t been back in there since.  But I guess progress of any kind.. big or small… is always a good thing.

painteddoor

That’s not to say that we’ve stopped doing work around the house.  That never happens!
And we’ve managed to have some good fun in between.   Since Morrissey ended up canceling his tour the only concert left was Sigur Ros and it was just what I needed after 4 weeks of crazy stress at work.  Sometimes cold beer and loud music is just what a girl needs.
(see concert post here)

Last night Richie and I got a much needed break from the day to day stresses of our jobs.  Back in November we purchased tickets to see Sigur Ros in Houston.  This is our second time seeing the band and as someone who’s seen LOTS of bands live I can honestly say they are at the top of my list.

Not only is the music amazing but the light show, video screens, and the number of people on stage (12 of them for this concert) makes it pretty spectacular.  Music has and will always be a huge part of our lives and honestly there’s nothing I enjoy more than being smashed in a crowd of people rockin’ out.

So here’s some pictures and video all taken with my iphone so obviously it’s not the very best of quality but it’s pretty darn good when you think about the fact that a silly phone can do this.

sigurrosBP2

The stage was filled with mic stands that didn’t have mics on top but lightbulbs (see above).  There were probably 20 or more light stands on stage that put on an amazing show as the lights danced with the music and faded in and out creating an atmosphere that Sigur Ros fans have come to know and love.

sigurrosBP3

I told Richie before the concert that I really hoped they played my favorite song Olsen Olsen off their
album Agaetis Byrjun.  (remember… this band is from Iceland!) AND THEY DID!  It was the highlight of the evening for me.

sigurrosBP1

The show opened up with a mesh screen across the front of the stage and it created the most awesome shadows as the band members moved and the lights flashed. There were horns, flutes, two drummers and a plethora of amazing sounds coming from that stage.

sigurrosBP4 sigurrosBP5

Their new album comes out in June and they played a number of new tunes during the show. They were really rockin’ and I got a great shot of Richie totally getting into it.

sigurrosBP7

After close to two hours of playing they did an encore and took their bows.  It was a much needed night out and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

sigurrosBP6

It got me to thinking about all the live bands we’ve seen and I tried to make a list but I’m sure I missed some……

Operas:
Carmen
La Boheme
La Traviata

So yes, it’s a huge part of our lives and I hope we are still rockin’ out when we’re in our 80′s. Of course we may not be able to actually hear the music but ya know! HA HA!

It’s been really quiet here on the blog… but in real life it’s been anything BUT!  I don’t know about everyone else but spring is my favorite season and I find myself full of energy, motivation and in general the happiest of happy!  Take note of the beautiful skies in these pictures.  We had days and days of this with temps in the 70′s.  It was heaven!

Thanks to daylight savings time and Richie getting a week out of school for spring break we have accomplished some pretty good stuff in the last 10 days.  Of course I’m covered in scrapes, cuts, splinters, and even have a bruised butt (can’t remember what I backed in to but I do remember thinking “OH, that’s going to look lovely!)  So yes, the Advil bottle is empty but the smile on my face makes up for every ache I feel.

New Fence Pickets

It seems like yesterday we said “we need to replace our rotten fence”.  Oh wait… that was like 4 years ago. Time really flies when you’re having fun, doesn’t it?  Apparently it does even when you’re NOT having fun.  HA HA!  So let there be more fun.  Lets build a fence!

I tried and tried to find some really good pictures of how horrible our fence was.  The fact is that I didn’t take that many simply because it was so embarrassing I realized that I purposely would “crop” the fence out of photos.  I did find a few little gems from the day we got the house and these will definitely give you an idea of what we had to deal with.

The one above is a view of the back fence standing at the fire pit.
The one below is after we cut out vegetation and trees.

You can see how much jasmine had been allowed to grow on the fence and cause it to rot and deteriorate.  The first big task was to pull all those vines off of there and actually kill the jasmine to keep it from coming back once we built a new fence.  The neighbor behind us said “do whatever you need to do”.  So for the next 2 years Richie battled all that stuff and finally killed it all.  Jasmine is EVIL!

We were then left with a rotten fence that was literally being propped up with wood scraps and tarps.  It was pretty trashy.  But it was low on the list when you have no walls in your house.  You know how that goes… “we’ll get to it”.

So with the help of his father (who is the finest man on the face of the earth!) They tore that sucker down and built “me” a new one.  They love saying that —  ”We built YOUR new fence”.  Why is everything MINE? MEN!  (later I caught them beating their chests and saying “LOOK WHAT WE HAVE CREATED!”.  It was a Tom Hanks “Castaway” moment.

Okay… back to our Island….  Check out that nasty fence.  I seriously have no idea how it was still standing.

backyardfence1

With the help of some manly tools the fence came down.  I had to giggle because I went out to help start hauling the fence off and I was literally pulling it down with my hands.  I think Richie just looks for a reason to get out the power tools. (LOL)

backyardfence2

Every once in a while we get some really lucky breaks and we were quite happy to find that most of the posts were still in excellent condition.  We decided to use what was there and only had to replace 3 posts.  That saved so much time!  Unfortunately they weren’t all plumb so we had to do some adjusting by digging around them and moving them a little.  No big deal, really.

New Fence Pickets backyardfence3

You can see below some of the posts being pushed into place and held while new concrete was poured.  This evened all the posts up.  Such smart men!

backyardfence5

Once the cement dried they began running the rot board and the stringers.  The pretty stuff was about to begin.  I’m happy his dad helped with this because Richie is a stickler about everything being level and plumb.  My patience runs thin… so thank you to my father in law!!!!!

backyardfence4 backyardfence6

After the stringers were all up Richie and I finished it up by hanging each picket and doubling up so there were no gaps after the fence begins to expand and contract …. with the help of a massive nail gun (more power!!!)  That thing scared the crap out of me.  It blows air out at you with each drive and I swear it feels like it’s going to blow you over.   It is a life and time saver, though.

After the pickets went up Richie topped it all off with some trim at the top.  I love how that looks… so finished and neat.

New Fence

LOOK WHAT HE CREATED!  Okay, it’s not fire… but it sure lights me up!

New Fence

I look forward to it aging a bit.  I’m not super fond of the new look.  I much prefer that grey weathered patina. NOT ROTTEN, just weathered.  :-)

backyardfence8

So hello you pretty new fence.  I love you and I know how good you were built.  May you live a long and happy life!    Now only two more sides to go.  More fencing this summer….

I also want to take a minute to thank all the new subscribers in the last few weeks.  There’s been a wonderful flurry of new blog followers and I’m so thankful to have you here.   I probably don’t say it enough but I truly appreciate having so many kind people watching and cheering us on.  So many of you are doing your own renovations so it’s great to have such a terrific support group. I look forward to meeting you all.  Please feel free to leave comments or drop me an email any time.  Anyway… WELCOME new followers!

We’re definitely staying on “track” in the back of the house as I continue to work on sheetrock, painting, and now installing the new track lighting that arrived recently.  The lighting in this space has been a long time coming… like so many things in this house.  Richie rewired this area allowing us to put lighting down the supporting beams of each room.  He also replaced all the outlets and switches.  I have a thing for white outlets.  They can’t be off white, or tan, or “ivory”.  They must be white.  It’s just a thing with me.  THANK YOU, RICHIE!

So for several years Richie has been bitching and moaning about how we need to order our track lighting but honestly I was always so focused on other parts of the house it just wasn’t a priority.  Now that I’m finally in the studio space and getting close to completing my workout room… lighting quickly became a priority. Richie wanted black, I wanted simple, and I think that’s what we ended up with.  Lets face it, track lighting isn’t all that pretty, interesting, or fabulous.  It functions, it lights stuff up and  it’s adjustable.  I guess those are all good things for a studio space.

I ordered 3 track lines and 10 track heads.  They are all WAC brand and it’s a “H” track in case anyone might be interested.  Track lighting comes in J, H, and L.  That’s Juno, Halo, and Lightolier. The H system is known as 3-wire single circuit systems and is the most popular track system.   The J is a 2 wire-wide single circuit system and the L is a 2 wire-narrow single circuit system.  It’s very confusing to me.  Richie tried to explain it but honestly “who cares”!  My eyes were rolling to the back of my head and I eventually passed out.  All I know is mine is “H” and all the tracks in my house are.  What would he say to me “that’s woman’s work”…. well, “that’s man’s work”.  Just make it look pretty, sweetheart!

trackwiresystems

Shamefully the beams in the studio part of the house have had wire dangling from them for years.  I’m sure we were violating all kinds of code and habitation laws.  Whatever!  We’re trashy like that.

First Richie had to actually install a box for the wire and then nail up rough cut boards to cover the channel.  All the beams in the house are rough cut which means they are not sanded nor have a super smooth finish.  We had to stay “rough” with the cap so it resembled the beam.

electricalbox

The board gives the beam a nice finished look and it hides the Romex wire.  (always a good thing and it’s code required).  It doesn’t come perfectly flush with the edge of the beam because again… rough cut means NOT PERFECT.  One side might match and the other side hang over.  You have to compromise and leave a small gap on each side.  It’s cool.

Then the track wire gets tied to the electricity and the track screwed into the newly installed boards.  Actually track lighting is SUPER simple to install.  I think even I could do it if I wasn’t so freaked out over being fried with electricity.  (yes, always turn off the electricity, friends!)

beamcap

Once that was done I stained the boards and put the lights in.  I’m still playing around with them and haven’t decided which type of bulb I’m going to end up with.  I love the idea of LEDs but I’m having a hard time finding ones that will fit.  Not to mention the LEDs cost almost as much as the lighting!  INSANE!

tracklighting-workoutroom

oooooo, pretty!  Well…. sort of.  YES, it is.  Okay… maybe.  I’m diggin’ it.  Yes, pretty works!

Richie’s studio is around the corner from my workout room and it’s a total and complete wreck but we went ahead and installed the lighting in there too.  Best to get it all over with.  Richie can do just about anything but gets cranky if I don’t do it in a way that makes sense to him.  It all had to be done at the same time.  Okay, okay…
So here is his lighting.  Excuse the mess.

The lights on the wall that I have circled came with the house.  They are AWESOME and we love them.  They’re Lightolier fixtures. Yes, again with the word “Lightolier”.  Lightolier is a company that manufactures and sells a wide array of lighting fixtures. It was founded in 1904 by Bernhard Blitzer under the name of New York Gas and Appliance Co.  In its early years, the company specialized in fancy decorative chandeliers then made a shift to high-end design and architectural in the 1920s.  They also happened to be the first to introduce track lighting systems.  It’s all so intertwined, isn’t it.  I just can’t keep “track”.    These were most definitely made in the late 50′s, mid 60′s and they weight a ton. They just don’t make anything like they use to.  (another reason we stuck with black… it matches)  You can see I’ve started on the sheetrock too.

RichieStudio-tracklights1

His studio has 2 six foot tracks and 6 heads.  We’ll also add some under cabinet lighting when it gets closer to the finish line.  (like 3 years from now)  JUST KIDDING!  It better not be.  HA HA!
I look forward to him having a lovely space filled with light (track and natural) so he can get back to making art and being creative.  Richie is a wonderfully creative person and he’s an amazing musician. All of this has been put on hold while we work on this house and I’m excited for him to get back in the groove.  Artistic people suffer when they can’t do their thing!

RichieStudio-tracklights2

So the lights are up and I’m happy about that.  I’ve also been working on my storage cabinet in the workout room (below) … trying to pick out a touch of color for the sliders and I also want to paint the door the same color.  Picking out paint is NOT my favorite thing to do.  TOTALLY MADDENING!  Another reason that white rooms have been so much fun for me.  Stress and fret-free choices are becoming more and more welcome in my old age.  :-)

Storage Cabinet

A teaser!  I’m working on it.  …….

So which one did I choose?  Well, I’m saving that for the next post. Lets just say that the color I’ve had in my head for years didn’t quite turn out the way I’d planned.  Home renovation is such fun!

Time to take a break from “working out” and talk about the things that make our homes special. Whether you’re mid-century or traditional, all of us love to fill our homes with beautiful FURNITURE!
Some of it we collect from estate sales, buy on a whim, get handed down from grandma or pick up off the side of the road.  Putting a home together should be fun and for me it has and does take years.  I love the look of a home that has morphed over many years of collecting over a home that gets decorated in a weekend from a big-box store.  The thing I have tried to do with our home is never bring anything into the house that I didn’t REALLY want or REALLY love.  Sometimes that’s hard to do… but it’s always worth it to wait for that special piece.

One of our favorite designers is Poul Kjaerholm and his pieces are spectacular.  He was a danish designer born in 1929 and passed away in 1980.  His award-winning designs have put him on the who’s who list of modern designers.  His pieces are clean, simple, and the epitome of modern.  They stand the test of time and they will NEVER go out of style.  The are also, however, expensive as all hell! The funny thing is…. most really beautiful, well-made things can be … BUT sometimes are totally worth it.

Kjaerholm is one of those designers you dream about owning but know in your heart it will probably never happen.  Or will it?

PK22 Poul Kjaerholm

I won’t go into the whole entire history of his life and work… the internet is full of info if you’re interested but I can say that although I love just about everything he’s done there are two things that Richie and I have had on our list for the past 10 years that seemed “in reach”.  (especially when we win the lottery!)  I’m sure everyone has a list and ours included the PK22 chairs above and the PK55 dining table.   I keep hearing Aerosmith singing “DREAM ON”… “DREAM ON”… “DREAM ON”.

After watching online auctions, ebay, and scouring the internet for any kind of “deal” we happened upon an auction at the Wright Auction House in Chicago.  They were auctioning a PK55 dining table.  We logged on and watched the bidding.  SOLD!   Then months later saw another one come up and watched again.  This time the item did not sell.  Hummm…. this could be very good.  Months and months went by and we noticed that the item eventually went into their “WRIGHT NOW” part of the auction site… which means you can buy it NOW instead of taking part in the actual auction.  It was still way out of our price range but we continued to watch it.

About 6 months after moving into this house we checked again and it was still there.  We decided to just take a leap and offer them what we could afford (realistically) and if they really wanted to get rid of it I figured they’d deal.  You have to arrange for shipping yourself so I got on the horn and got bids for shipping from Chicago to Texas.  Cheapest shipper was $525.  WTF!  So it was back to the drawing board.  We came up with a new number that included the shipping but still totaled the amount we could spend and they SAID YES!  Yes, I almost peed in my pants. (even as I write this).  THEY SAID YES!!!!
I got online and initiated a bank transfer of funds from ours to theirs (before they backed out and came to their senses) and it was paid for in a matter of minutes.  As I logged into the website to see my table a big
S-O-L-D banner came across the image and I could hardly believe that it was on it’s way.

So here it sits in our dining room.  After 8 years of  staring at this item on our list… I took a red marker and crossed it off.  It is the most beautiful, well-made piece of furniture I have ever bought.
I’m so proud to own it and it was worth every day, month, and year we had to wait.  Every hard-earned penny too.  Additional proof that decorating your home no matter what style you love takes time, effort and patience.  It’s part of the fun.

Poul Kjaerholm PK55 Table

We had 6 Eames Dining Chairs that we knew would be perfect around it.  It easily fits six but you could squeeze in two more.

Poul Kjaerholm PK55 Table

Those bubble lamps are from the 60′s so they have that vintage golden patina.  Or maybe it’s just cigarette smoke. HA!  Remember the days when everyone use to smoke inside, in airplanes, in offices.  CRAZY to think about.  Whichever it was I think we’ll call it vintage cool because that sounds so much better than smoke-stained!

Poul Kjaerholm PK55 Table

I love how the brushed stainless steel legs so gracefully cross each other at the corners.  It reminds me of a woman crossing her legs.  (her very thin legs!!  DAMN HER!)

Poul Kjaerholm PK55 Table

Many of you may have already seen plenty of pictures of this room (sorry for the repeat) but I’ve yet to talk about most of the pieces.  It’s fun to share the dreams you had for your home that have now come true.

Poul Kjaerholm PK55 Table

The simple top seems to float above the legs.  It is by far the one piece in my house that makes me feel like a grown up.  HA HA!  The PK22 chairs will remain on my list along with the hope of “one day”… it could happen!

If you’re looking for a certain mid-century modern piece I suggest you check out Wright Auctions.
They have some really gorgeous stuff.  It’s fun just to window shop, too.  You can also check out more of Poul Kjaerholm’s designs on google.

Do you have a special piece in your home that makes you proud?  Maybe something that you saved and saved to get?
