cement is a ball

Yes, we enjoy our yard… and we love to put all kinds of things out in our landscape (besides plants). We’ve seen these concrete garden balls in different places throughout the years and always intended to make some. Finally with a little more spare time than usual… we got the concrete and went for it. After collecting some old glass shades that were picked up at garage sales or given to us (thanks, John F.) they got a nice thin coat of cooking oil rubbed on the insides.  We mixed the concrete and began scooping it in the 3 glass globes.
After letting the concrete cure for 4 days, we felt like they were ready. We put them in an old trash can and carefully tapped the glass with a hammer until all the pieces were free.
A good wash with the water hose got off any glass pieces still stuck to the surface. It also cleaned up any oil residue.
They cleaned up so nice and each one has such great character.  Different lines and color, some pitted, some smooth.  I think they are just gorgeous!  I’ll probably put a concrete sealer on them for protection… but maybe not. Sometimes just the natural patina is best. Now I’ll have to fret about where to put them. I imagine they’ll get carried to 10 different spots before I decide.  (I’m  c r a z y!)
For now they’re out of the grass and in the yucca bed.  We had fun with these and hope to do some more soon.
