Demo and Hot Rods

posted on

The kitchen project is right on schedule and our cabinet maker gave us the green light to demo the kitchen and remove all those horrible cabinets WHOO HOO! So the fun begins and so does life without a kitchen. We went 8 weeks without hot water and laundry when we moved in… so I think we’ll be okay with this. Another project to “get through”. Still, we’re excited.

Richie and his father handled the tear out and I tried to create a “make shift” kitchen in the back of the house. We have a counter and small sink in the back so it’s now set up with a dish drainer, our coffee pot, and some other items we use every day. We’re grateful to have the space. It’s working out fine.

They removed the island so fast I didn’t get a chance to take a picture of the tear out… but here’s some of the wreckage!

Here’s where the island was. When my new island goes in I’ll have 3 new electrical outlets in it. I could pinch myself I’m so excited about that. I’ve been living with only one outlet

They basically just carried out the entire cabinet so they could cut it down for Richie’s dad. He’s going to use part of it in his “pump house” up in the country. (Less for us to haul away).

Lots of drawers…

They took the top off this cabinet first and then had to pretty much demolish it piece by piece to get it out. Once Jerry gets this side in he’s going to use his diamond blade saw to cut two holes in the brick and install two more electrical outlets for me that will reside in the quartz backsplash. (It’s like a freggin’ dream!)

I’m so happy to be rid of these nasty things. I’m sure they were fine in their day… but, well…. it was time for an upgrade. :-) No more of those annoying “sliders” that I always slammed my fingers in DAILY!!!! I’ll now have rows of big beautiful drawers to put things in.

Once the cabinets came out (they did it in less than two hours) and all the appliances were safely stored, the clean up began. It was pretty messy, but overall they did a good job keeping it to a minimum. There’s no way to do this without making a mess, plain and simple.

A few hours later Jerry, our amazing cabinet maker arrive to take a look. I told him to promise me that next time he came over he would bring one of this hot-rods…
and he did! This guy is pretty incredible. Truly. Not only is he gifted with wood… he’s also gifted with just about everything else, including rebuilding old cars and customizing them. He’s even won awards for it. I’m sure he’ll win another award from me when I get those cabinets in. I just love meeting people like that. This car just BLEW MY MIND! …. take a look….

It was so stunning and every little detail was to perfection. (I’m looking at his perfection and squealing inside cuz I know he’s doing the same to my cabinets)

Jerry did everything on this car except the upholstery. He said his wife wouldn’t let him get a sewing machine… but he was sure he could have probably done it. HA HA! He even painted the exterior, installed all these cool little gadgets on the inside, like metal cup holders, 16 CD changer, AC, automatic windows, ceiling lights. THE WORKS. My jaw dropped at the sight of this and it stayed that way for at least 30 minutes as we looked at all the bells and whistles. TOO MUCH!

Check out the beautiful wood strips in the back. That same wood is on the interior roof. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Maybe in pictures… but never in my own driveway.

He’s planning on setting the cabinet boxes on Wednesday so we have a little plumbing work to do and some more clean up and painting. It’s going to be a fun week.
I’ll keep my camera battery charged.
