The kitchen was nice for the time it was built but just seemed too closed in for today's living. We had to remove some things to open up the space. Before. The kitchen is quite small and narrow and felt so dark and dated. Over the sink area on the right was a peg board screen built to hide the wiring, light and the vent up on the ceiling. To the left was a decorative feature of wood slats and underneath that was a small cabinet. There was also a sub-zero fridge which I LOVED but it was all rusted and wasn't cooling... so it had to go. Linoleum on the floor. A view of the peg board, brick, sub-zero, and a not so great ceiling fan. I painstakingly removed the linoleum from the concrete, as we want concrete throughout the house. It was a mess. At the end of the kitchen was a built in grill/rotisserie with a vent and it was REALLY bad. I'm sure it was great in the day but had definitely been used and was making the whole house smell. I knew I wouldn't use it so Richie's dad is here taking it out. I would much rather have cabinet storage in that space. (not enough storage, as is) Here's a view in progress. Richie and I were on the same page with our idea. He went to work and built a Picture of raw but finished box. Now I get to work on making it Box is painted and vent hood is in. Light panels have covers and all is well. Not too bad. There is a small but suitable kitchen pantry that was pretty rough. It had exposed electrical wires and wasn't workable. We tore out the pantry, the electricians ran new wire that was properly sealed in the walls and we installed supports for the shelves. Everything was painted a nice bright white. A new light was also installed. After. It's actually pretty roomy. It fits everything we need. Here we really haven't done much more because we will be tearing out the existing cabinets and having custom ones built and installed with a new quartz top. Hopefully summer of 2011 so check back soon. (update: kitchen reno complete...continue on for after pictures) This isn't really in the kitchen or the living room but it's part of the pantry so we'll call it We start the renovation. Our carpenter was AMAZING. I feel so blessed to have found him. Richie helps him install one side of the kitchen cabinets. The cabinets are primarily drawers. Big and small... LOTS OF DRAWERS. Here they are in the beginning stages of installation. Once I stained the cabinets the Silestone tops in Blanco Maple were installed. I also painted all the brick white which helped BIG TIME! We put all 28 handles on each drawer and door. It was stressful! But we are pleased with the look of the european bar handle. We also love the new faucet. The area where the indoor cooker use to be got nice new cabinets. The storage was more important to me. We love it. The counters were extended to allow for a couple of navy bar stools. The get used a lot. It also made the kitchen feel bigger with more surface space. A view of new Miele stovetop, Kraus sink, and A.S. Pekoe faucet. I love the contrast between the dark cabinets and light counters and painted brick. I'm so happy! A view of the cabinets that make up the Island. The far left drawer pulls out and that's where I have a double trash bin. I'm very pleased with the overall look. It turned out pretty much exactly as I had planned. I'm happy it's behind us. Time to enjoy! It's not only a joy to cook in but very easy to keep clean.
