Planters, Lighting, Fans and Floors

posted on

I hesitated to do this post, as I feel like I’m a broken record stuck on that part of the song that drives you crazy.  Don’t worry, I too am wishing I could move the needle to another part of the record and get over it!  (for those of you who don’t remember vinyl… sorry.)

The thing is I really try hard to start a project and stick to it until it’s done.    Inch by inch, post by post, I am still “working it out”.  Last weekend was a bust and I didn’t get a chance to do much in ….

Art Love: Modern Quilts

posted on

I’m so fortunate to have a job that I truly enjoy. With the radio station being located on a University campus I get the opportunity to see some wonderful things.  The NPR station where I work is located right between the Music Department and the Art Department. You can imagine how much fun that is… especially when those two things are such a huge part of my life. It’s never boring… always inspiring.

The Museum on campus has some really amazing exhibits pass through and I’m always eager to check them out. The National Quilt exhibit was just about to ….

Nice Legs!

posted on

When something doesn’t go the way you planned… just put some hair-pin legs on it… and everything is alright! Nothing beats a nice pair of legs, right? Long, short, skinny, thick… metal, wood, or concrete…. there are so many kinds to love. Of course I’m talking about furniture and particularly the little tables we planned for our bed side.

These pretty legs arrived a week ago after I realized the little “box” tables that Richie built for our last platform bed would not work in our new master bedroom. The tables are suppose to hang and “float” on the wall but ….

Architectural Pottery

posted on

It’s hard for me to envision a modern space without plants. When I think of the designs of famous architects like Neutra or Eichler, or modern day architects like Austin based Lake and Flato, it’s impossible to imagine these spaces without the beauty of architectural pottery.  Their simple, modern, clean lines, unspoiled by fluff or distractions make each plant that resides in them a little more spectacular.  An ornate or colorful pot just doesn’t seem to fit in a modern home.  These fit, these work, and it’s why I am so proud to have not one but three pieces of ….

King Sized!

posted on

After lots of work and a failed attempt at making our king sized platform bed for the master bedroom I’m happy to say “roll over and stay on your side”….. IT’S DONE!  Well, almost… I still need a mattress (minor detail).

Poor Richie… check out the sweat drip coming off his nose in the 100 degree weather. Wonderful husband!!

Boy does it feel good to say “it’s done”.   I know Richie just about had a heart attack when I told him I wasn’t happy with our first attempt at making this bed.  If you read a recent post that we ….

Leftovers

posted on

I love leftovers! Yes, not having to cook is always a good thing at our busy house… but I’m actually talking about grass! I know… that doesn’t help much and now you might be completely confused. While we are currently working on some pretty big projects there are always small things that sneak in between and sometimes I stop and realize those small things are the tiny wins that get us that much closer to the vision in our heads of how this house will “someday” be.

Back yard of our old house. I couldn’t find one of the front ….

Mural Artist: Robert Madden

posted on

I get asked a lot of questions about our house and the amazing mural that spans almost the entire length of the living/den area. It’s one of those features that is impossible to miss! After my last post I realized that most of my followers did NOT know this was actually a media cabinet that housed books, cds, magazines, the TV and stereo, etc.

The artist who painted this mural is Robert Madden. Robert and his wife Bonnie paid us a visit this past weekend and brought over Frank and Nancy, another lovely couple who wanted to see the ….

All this for a TV?

posted on

Well, it’s still raining here in Texas, but at least not non-stop. We’re doing our best to work around the down pours.  It looks like the upcoming week shows some improvement and we’ll see the return of heat and humidity. Never thought I’d be so excited for the return of both!

I have been taking advantage of the fact that there is always an indoor project to do when the weather doesn’t cooperate. So LUCKY ME, I’ve been working on a portion of our media cabinet. Yes, aren’t you jealous?… I know you are. If dirty, messy, stinky, and sticky are ….

“Who’ll Stop the Rain”

posted on

Credence Clearwater pondered it, Prince colored it purple, Adele set fire to it, Gene Kelly sang in it, Led Zepplin were fools in it, The Cure prayed for it, Husker Du stood in it, Willie Nelson saw blue eyes crying in it, The Jesus and Mary Chain were only happy when it happened, the Eurythmics let it fall on their heads, and Bob Dylan knew a hard rain’s gonna fall…….  but I’m just SICK OF IT!

My drive to work most days looks like this.

Every day for the last 12 days it has RAINED!  I know, I know, most of the country ….

This, that, and a red arrow

posted on

Time to get back to business around here. Summer is in full swing and we’ve been a little crazy with house projects. With the heat so bad we try to have at least one outdoor project and one indoor project going so when it gets unbearable we can move inside to work. It’s going good but now we have crap scattered everywhere which tends to make me crazy. Oh well.. I’m just happy to be “doing”.

Our bedroom project is still going, but it’s mostly my fault for being slow and wanting everything just so. So this post is about the ….

Master bedroom: baby steps

posted on

Hope you had a great weekend. I think my oatmeal cookie bars really paid off, because we worked well, and accomplished enough this weekend. I say “enough” because there’s only so many hours in the day and the way I see it, whatever you accomplish, big or small is enough. So I’ll take a minute and give an update on “just enough” in the master bedroom project. Baby steps seemed appropriate for the title of this post because that’s exactly what it takes around here.

The walls are done, the beams and door frames stained and now we turn to the ….

Ding dong goes the cowbell

posted on

Hello, hello, is anybody home? I’m sure that’s how most people feel when the come to our house. It’s like Fort Knox thanks to all the fences and courtyards that surround our house of glass. Sometimes I love it and sometimes it worries me that people might need to “get to us” but can’t. When the gates are open it’s still a mystery to some because this house is so unique and special they can’t figure out that this….. is the door bell.

It’s a small piece of wood (carved by my husband) and attached to a string that runs through ….

master bedroom update

posted on

Now that the kitchen is done we moved back into the master bedroom. We actually stopped all the work in this room when the kitchen project started to move so fast. Once we found a carpenter everything took off and the bedroom was abandoned. I’m definitely ready to get back to it. So here we go….

We’ll start with a quick “update” and reminder of where we were and what we’ve done.
The dark wood tongue and groove ceilings got cleaned and stained. The nice opaque stain really brightened the space. You may remember this post. >>>> Click Here.
