I hesitated to do this post, as I feel like I’m a broken record stuck on that part of the song that drives you crazy.  Don’t worry, I too am wishing I could move the needle to another part of the record and get over it!  (for those of you who don’t remember vinyl… sorry.)

The thing is I really try hard to start a project and stick to it until it’s done.    Inch by inch, post by post, I am still “working it out”.  Last weekend was a bust and I didn’t get a chance to do much in my work out room due to a wonderful and unexpected visit from my uncle (my mom’s brother).  It’s been years since I’ve seen him and so a dinner party was in order!   And it forced me to give my house a really good cleaning.  You know how that goes… company comes and you think “OH MY GOSH this place is a wreck” and you turn into a crazy cleaning lady.  Trust me, it was a really good thing!

A few things did happen over the last week.  Always the planner, I’m constantly swirling around ideas and trying to get inspiration to not only start but to finish a project.  This inspiration board below has been changing over the last few weeks but I think it’s almost there.

Workout Room Inspiration

Being the plant lover that I am I wanted a lovely planter for my space.  I decided to order a case study planter from Modernica and it arrived last week.  I went for the large one and I’m really glad I did.  They come in two sizes and you can get either metal or wood legs.

Modernica Case Study Planters

I’m really loving the simplicity of the stand.  The legs are two pieces that fit together like a puzzle and the weight of the pot sort of holds everything together.  It’s so pretty.  I chose the white one and it’s sitting in my den until I finish the room.  I didn’t want a drop of paint on it!

The cigar bubble lamp seen in the pictures is also from Modernica.  I’m probably going to buy another hanging bubble for my office space in the next month.   They put out such a lovely glow it’s hard to resist.

Modernica Case Study Planter

Sorry… pictures are like potato chips for me…. I can’t take just one!

While I was picking up a plant for my new planter I spied this crazy looking plant called a Cylindrica and had to bring it home.  Has anyone ever seen one of these?  I’m so in LOVE! I went back the next day to get another one and they were all gone.

Eames LTR wire tableCylindrica Plant

I also ordered the track lighting for my room and I’m just waiting for the shipment.  I went ahead and ordered lights for both my workout room and Richie’s studio so it was a total of 3 strips and 10 track heads.  I chose these:

WAC 730 Track Head

Track lighting has really come to our rescue in this house as we have NO attic to run electrical wires through so all the electricity for overhead lighting is fed down the beams in each room.  The tracks make it so easy to add as much lighting as you need and to space them up and down the beam allowing you to distribute light to certain areas of the room.  A single pendant would have never been as useful.

After I ordered these the customer service department informed me that since I was ordering more than 5 of the same item they were not eligible for returns.  WHAT!?  Okay, I really do understand why that would be a “policy”, as many of these online retailers are just drop ship operations and they don’t keep stock so they certainly wouldn’t want TEN of the same item returned.  HOWEVER… I am a woman on the edge.  Clearly they have no idea what a policy like that does to an old lady who has been renovating for 3 years.  It turns me into a cranky ass.  I very politely told them to reduce the number to 5 and I would gladly go to another online retailer to get the other five.  I was sure they would LOVE to have my money.  Minutes later they “made an exception” for me and apologized.  Okay, I know, I’m a real crankster aren’t I?  But seriously, that just really got me twisted.  Please tell me some of you have had to throw a “minor” fit to get what you wanted.  Please.

Okay, anyway those are on the way.  They’ll be here Friday (22nd) – CAN’T WAIT!

You’ll also see the coin rubber flooring in my inspiration photo.  Depending on how good or BAD the concrete floor ends up looking I’m going to order some rubber flooring to either put under some of my equipment or to possible cover the entire floor with.  I ordered samples and I’m really digging the coin pattern over the textured one.  I’ll do either white or gray.

Coin Rubber Flooring Samples

If there’s enough room and a decent place to hang it I will also get a wall-mount fan for the room.  Having some air flow during a workout is a MUST but I definitely didn’t want a ceiling fan. Besides that I’d probably stick my hand up in it and cut my arm off.  Not a good look for me.  I’m digging the all metal one in the inspiration photos.  They run between 300-400 dollars so I’ll see what’s left in the budget. (wink!)

Wall Mount Fan

The rest of the room is stuff I already have and will just work it all in.  I’m going to try to squeeze in a little color maybe on the door and the sliding storage cabinet in that room. That blue/turquoise color is  something I’ve wanted to do for a while.

The last thing is the Stendig calendar.  I do want a really big calendar for the space to keep track of the days I work.  I’m hoping it will motivate me to stay on track.  Seeing it BIG AND BOLD will either make me really proud or shame me into doing what I should.  The calendar was designed in 1966 by Massimo Vignelli and taken that year into the Design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  Unfortunately these calendars are so popular they are all sold out.  I’m going to find something comparable or make my own.  I DID, however go ahead and order one for next year.  There’s a waiting list!  (crazy, I know)

So although I didn’t get to actually work in the room there has been some good action going on and I’m really feeling good about how it’s coming together. Richie always makes fun of me for having a plan so far in advance but once I’m done with the grunt work I want it DONE and move on. No sense in delaying it and the internet makes it so easy!

Thanks for reading and letting me share my plans.  Have you bought anything online lately that you’re super excited about?

You never know where the day will take you…. especially when you have nothing planned and nothing expected of you.  The day is yours!

We enjoyed warm and beautiful weather during Thanksgiving and several fabulous days off. I really felt the need to be outside as much as possible.  Nothing makes me happier than working in my yard.

It started out with this….. YUCK!

My flowerbeds were looking a little shabby.  The summer sun had pretty much baked everything.  It was time to clear the beds out and plant some pretty winter flowers to brighten my days.  Even though it’s almost December, it’s the perfect time to plant these as it’s only just now getting “cold” in Texas.  When I say cold I mean highs in the 60′s and 70′s and lows in the 40′s.  Pretty pleasant, really.

Pansy Flower Bed

Pansy Flower Bed

Big improvement.

Pansy flowers

Their sweet faces and pretty shades of pink, purple, yellow and white were just what I needed. By spring the beds will be full and thick…. flowers for all to enjoy.

But I wasn’t done and decided to replace a plant in our saucer pot outside the dining room. Again…. the summer heat was brutal and many of my plants were dust.  Snake Plants (or mother’s tongue) or whatever you want to call them, are almost impossible to kill.  I went for it.

Turns out I ended up with too many beach rocks and had a handful left over.  Here’s where the day took a strange turn.  Maybe it was the pretty pansies, or the rocks themselves.  Maybe all the butterflies, bees, and spiders that were out enjoying the day, too.  I don’t know… but before I knew it I had taken the left over rocks and started painting.  Again, you just never know where the day will take you.  UNEXPECTED FUN!

I had painted on rocks before but quickly learned that inks are WAY better than paint.  It’s much more fluid and easier to draw with.  It started out with “nature”…. pansies included.

painted rocks

And quickly progressed to “modern – abstract”.  ( one Eames inspired, of course )
I’m really pushing it here.  I can’t draw worth a poop.  WHO CARES!

I have no idea what got in to me… but I was totally BUGGIN’!  I’m pretty terrible at drawing so I cheated a little and did a few with decoupage.  I just LOVED THOSE!   I really have a thing for beetles, bees and butterflies.  Apparently roaches are out … but grasshoppers and dragonflies are definitely in!

What a strange turn of events!  From pansies to painted rocks…. I totally enjoyed this day off!
Seems so weird at a time when I should be hanging wreaths and decorating for Christmas.  Honestly I love Christmas at other people’s houses but I’d rather be painting bugs and digging in the dirt.

Okay, okay.  I will put up a tree … eventually.  More of that another day.

I scattered the rocks in the yard, in some potted plants, and around the house… on window sills and tables. I even decided to hang one.

I would love to say that I’ve been so busy with all these fantastic projects that I haven’t had time to post anything … but the real truth is so BORING!  With much hesitation I decided to just go with boring and at least feel good about what’s real around here.  I’ve been PRICKED!

A few weeks ago while out re-potting and planting in the back yard I decided to give one of my cactus a new pot, as he was growing so well that he deserved more room.  I put my gardening gloves on to get to work and while transferring the little PRICK.. he decided to GET ME!  Maybe he wasn’t happy about the move… or maybe he’s been waiting for a chance to show me what he’s made of.   I was careless and feeling very super hero-ish and one of those thorns went straight through my glove and into the side of my thumb.  Hey, it happens… you pull back, curse a little and move on never to think of it again.

EXCEPT…. turns out those thorns can really “F” you up!  Three weeks later and I’m still suffering!
I ended up having to go to the doctor because thanks to the damn internet scaring the shit out of me with things like “joint  damage”, “long term disability”, “infection”, “surgery required” and last but not least “GET TO A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY”.  What?  For a thorn?  Yep!   Come on … check out that big thorn below in the middle of this cactus.  You know he’s quite proud of that big one!  GOOD LORD IT HURT!

So to rule out infection… I’m currently on a strong antibiotic.. which seems to be doing NOTHING!  I’m one of those people who hates taking medicine unless you can prove to me that I actually NEED it.
There’s nothing worse to me than when a doctor says… “oh, lets put you on THIS ..just in case”.
Ummmmm, LETS NOT!  If you’ve ever read one of those informational pamphlets or listen to disclaimers on drug commercials it makes you NEVER want to take ANYTHING!  Okay, okay, I’m being a baby… I’m taking my medicine… 5 days after I’m told.  I SHOWED HER!  (laughing)

As you can see below… it’s swollen (right thumb joint) and I can barely move it.  The joint is crazy stiff and I have no strength in it at all.  This is definitely putting a damper on my projects list and since I have more time to do nothing… the list is growing!

Okay, I didn’t mean to turn this into a medical post, or to whine, bitch or complain… but the more I thought about it the more it felt right to just say “hey, this sucks!”.  I also thought what if its happened to someone else and they have advice for me.  (hummmm, a great reason to post about it!) I sometimes forget that it’s a blog about ANYTHING that happens at this house… not just the pretty stuff. Ha Ha!  So thanks for listening…. I’m sure you’ve all dealt with a prick of your own at some point in time.  Turns out even a rose bush can do this.  Roses?  No, they’re too pretty.  But they CAN! So be careful in your yard/garden.

Last thing to share today is some of the intelligent conversation Richie and I had over this little happening.  Sometimes an eye roll is appropriate… followed by a burst of laughter.  He’s a ding dong!

Me:  ”I think I need to see a doctor about this. It says on the internet that it can be serious”.

Him: “Don’t you think you’re over-reacting… it’s just a thorn”.

Me: “No really, it can screw up your joints and cause permanent damage… and if there’s still a piece of a thorn in there they have to “cut” it out”!

Him: “Well, damn, maybe we shouldn’t have cactus around here… sounds like they’re dangerous”.

Me: “Are you serious?… it’s my fault.  I need to be more careful around them”.

Him: “Well, why don’t we just buy a bag full of cobras and let them out in the yard and “just be careful around them”

Me: (EYE ROLL… burst of laughter!!!! )

I couldn’t stop laughing… I guess you had to be there.  I kept envisioning cobras and cactus after me.
I even had a crazy dream about it.  He’s a mess.

So, nothing more to report around here except a little Prick and a whole lotta NOTHING going on.  Fingers crossed (not thumbs) that I can get back to normal soon.  It’s amazing how something so small can screw you up!

Thanks for letting me vent.  I promise to be back soon… I owe Alex a post about my couch.  Which seems appropriate since I’ve been doing nothing but laying on it!

It’s hard for me to envision a modern space without plants. When I think of the designs of famous architects like Neutra or Eichler, or modern day architects like Austin based Lake and Flato, it’s impossible to imagine these spaces without the beauty of architectural pottery.  Their simple, modern, clean lines, unspoiled by fluff or distractions make each plant that resides in them a little more spectacular.  An ornate or colorful pot just doesn’t seem to fit in a modern home.  These fit, these work, and it’s why I am so proud to have not one but three pieces of Architectural Pottery for my own home.

The pictures above are lovely examples of Architectural Pottery, a Los Angeles company founded in 1950 by Max and Rita Lawrence. Prominent mid-century LA architects such as Richard Neutura and Pierre Koenig favored the pottery line for spare, geometrically ordered residential gardens and commercial buildings. The Museum of Modern Art in New York exhibited pieces as early as 1951 and these savvy planters appear in many of Julius Schulman’s famed photographs of Southern California architecture. Molds can weigh hundreds of pounds and a single ceramic piece can take over a week to produce from start to finish. Today, Vessel USA Inc. continues to produce Modern Planters & Containers, Ceramic Sculpture and Garden Accessories from its studio in San Diego, California.

I was lucky enough to get my hands of three large architectural pottery pots for the outside of our home.  We have two white ones on the back porch and one black in the front of the house.  After working so hard staining the outside of the house it was inevitable that I would end up “fixing up” the rest of the area as well.  You know how that goes… you get a new couch for your living room and then the chair next to it looks ratty… then you decide you need new curtains… then the paint starts to look dull and before you know it that new couch has caused you to redecorate the whole damn room.  It happens to us all, I guess.  So I decided to do the same to our outdoor space.

My Architectural Pottery

The two white pots as seen above are on the back porch and look really nice against the new stain.  The plants I had in them were “hiding” the pot… so I decided to pull them up and plant some foxtail ferns, as they grow “up” and won’t spill over the sides.  These suckers are heavy!

It was also a great chance for me to do something with the two pots Richie found for me at an estate sale that have been sitting in the shed.  I love the shape of these (below) but obviously someone had painted them a nasty yellow at some point. I scrubbed the crap out of them but the left over paint wasn’t budging… so out came the white stain.  Each pot got scrubbed, wire brushed, and then painted white.  White pots seem to be my thing, I guess.  I love them!

Painted Planters

The staining of the house has been going really well so this also seems like the perfect time to share the results. We’ve been steady at it and it is really paying off.  The back of the house is now a place I love to be. We ended up giving our old patio set (table and four chairs) to some friends and we brought out 4 of our butterfly chairs in place of the set.  The old covers look crappy but I’ve got new ones on the way from Circa 50.  They are vinyl mesh and perfect for the outdoors!  Can’t wait to get those.

Architectural Pottery

The large architectural planters look so much better and I love being able to see the whole pot.  The small white painted pots fit right in too.  But how about that paint job!  I could just pinch myself.  You may remember what it looked like when we started.  >>> SEE HERE!

Painted Pots

So, it was definitely one of those moments where making one thing look pretty made everything else look shabby and forced me to make some changes.  With the old patio set gone, the butterfly chairs out, and the new pots and plants I feel like things are really shaping up outside.  Just in time too.  We’re expecting our first “cold” front this weekend. By Tuesday we’ll be down in the 60′s! HELL YEAH! If that happens, it will set a new record for us here in SE Texas.  Bring it on!  I’m so ready.

Back of House

Of course I had to snap a shot of my baby.  I think she approves of the upgrades.  (laughing)
Since we put the chairs out she loves jumping up in them for a little cat nap.  I’m sure she thinks we did it all for her.  The little priss!

Kitty in the yard

And one more picture of the other architectural pottery planter in the front.  This one is black. I’ll probably never find another one… but we’ve always got our eyes peeled! They truly are perfect for our modern home.

I hope to be back again this week with an update on a small project I did in the bedroom. Glad it’s a short week. I vote for a 4 day week every week!!!!

I think I might need help! Do they have support groups for plant freaks? I could possibly be out of control with my desire for the green stuff. I’ve always loved them but I do believe having a home with so many windows and so much light has definitely brought things to a level that might warrant a new show on A&E.

It’s been a almost a week since my last post and I needed to take a little break from my digital world.. because there’s lots going on and I can’t organize it in my head, so I decided to just live it, enjoy the ride… then blog about it later. It’s good to live in the now! But I also hate it when blogs I enjoy don’t give me all that eye candy I crave, so I needed to share something. Insert plant fetish HERE!

airplants

As one of my favorite bloggers, Kim at Kibster, can attest to… I have a true love for air plants. Maybe it’s that they only need air and a weekly bath to survive, or maybe it’s because they don’t require dirt to live so you can “plant” them anywhere. All I know is that they are BEAUTIFUL and amazing. I marvel at their sculptural shapes, spindly arms, and very Dr. Seuss-ish tendencies.  They look as if they could just get up and walk out if you don’t watch over them.  So I better take good care of them!  I purchased some last summer [ CLICK HERE ] and decided to get bigger ones, this time.

After a good little 30 minute soak I began setting them around the house.  My husband was laughing at me as I hopped from room to room putting them in bowls, vases, and candlesticks.  WHERE TO PUT THEM?   Honestly I had no plan.. I’ll just move them around and have fun!

Many places sell these but I ordered them online from airplantsupplyco.com because I’m a sucker for beautiful websites.  (theirs is simple and lovely)

I love my danish candle holder from Kibster’s Etsy Shop.  I have decided to collect a few more danish lovelies in different sizes and shapes.  Kim’s shop has gorgeous vintage decor.

airplant - butzii

These little plants called Butzii are crazy cool.  Their curly arms make me giggle.

I need to find a good home for this large Juncea.  I think I’ll DIY an airplant cradle from wood and leather and hang it on the wall at some point.  She’s so whispy and sweet!

I also replaced a couple of succulents and added a new one (oh big surprise.. more freegin’ plants)  Honestly this one came only because I found this little pot for $2.00.
It was orange, which was one great thing (love orange) and it was Chevron.  I hadn’t really jumped on that whole chevron trend.. but here’s my chance to “jump” in a small way.

Chevron Planter

Added a new aloe plant in the living room.  And I promise this is it…

aloe plant on Saarinen tulip table

Actually there’s more but I’ll spare you the torture of any more plant activity.  I can’t really imagine my home without them!  They add so much life and color and interest to a room.  I guess if you’re going to be obsessed about something there are much worse things.  :-)

We’ve been really busy with projects and have some wonderful “finds” to report but like I said I’m living in the moment and enjoy all that is going on  … more on all that later.
Now go out and buy some plants so I’m not the only FREAK around!!
