A Day to Get Away

posted on

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and if you managed to NOT overeat, then you are far better than me at resisting the Thanksgiving temptations.  It also doesn’t help that my mother in law cannot control herself and had to bake 3 pies, bread pudding, a German chocolate cake and enough food for an army.  The woman is mad… mad I say!

It’s been nice to have a few extra days off and what better way to spend a day than to hop in the car and drive to Houston.  Richie had told me he was driving ….

Hallway Update: I think I’m becoming a “pro”

posted on

Time for a quick update.  And just so you know, the title is a bit sarcastic, but honestly I’m starting to feel like it’s only a matter of time before I put an ad in the paper for people to hire me to fix their sheetrock. I’m starting to like it that much. Is that weird?

After my last hallway post I casually mentioned to Richie that with the Thanksgiving holidays coming wouldn’t it be nice to get that paneling off the wall and some sheetrock up BEFORE his vacation starts.  It was a feeble attempt to coax him into doing ….

Floating Away The Blues

posted on

There’s this wall.  She’s kind of cool in an artsy, fun way.  Her maker had great ideas and good intentions.  She was well thought out and totally awesome in her day.  I love her but I had to let her go.  It’s okay, though… there’s a happy ending.

Finally a weekend to get back to work in the back “studio” of our house.  My goal was to work on this little corner of the hallway.  The picture above is what it looked like when we closed on the house.  I know it doesn’t look half bad but just trust me ….

A Little Help from Mother Nature

posted on

Yesterday I celebrated my birthday. Well… actually there wasn’t much celebrating because I took 3 naps during the day. I’m not sure if it’s because I crashed after a tough six weeks at “work” or if it’s because I turned 45 and that’s just what “old” people do… they nap. It may be a little of both… and for the record if naps are what come with getting older then I totally approve!

The past 6 weeks have been intense for me and I’m starting to come through it. The fundraiser is over and my schedule is finally going to get ….

Begging for Dollars

posted on

As much as I love working on my house and blogging about the projects sometimes real life gets in the way and it seems impossible to get anything posted.  A sweet friend recently told me “I miss you” and it occurred to me just how long it had been.

I wish that I could tell you I’m in the Caribbean kicked back in a beach chair sipping something fruity with an umbrella in it but I’m really parked in front of a microphone begging for money.  I say begging because it sometimes feels that way but really it’s more like ….

Latest Finds

posted on

With all the work going on around the house we haven’t had much luck with our thrift finds lately.  There’s been no $20.00 barcelona chairs or $5.00 faberge eggs. (giggle)  That doesn’t mean we don’t get out when we can and find a few things worth picking up.  I do believe the days of scoring big every weekend with designer mid-century furniture is over.

My husband is a hoot!  I don’t talk much about him except to tell you how awesome he is at home renovation but he’s also one of the best story tellers I’ve ever known.  He’s an avid ….

Wood Accents

posted on

We’re piddling here at The Goode House.  Yes, it’s back to school, end of summer, schedule changes and a shift toward the fall.  It’s been HOT and we’re tired.  I think by the end of August everyone is worn out, no matter where you live.   Which makes this the perfect time to do little things.  Fun things.

Back in January Richie and I went to see Neutral Milk Hotel in concert.  He came home with a t-shirt but I wanted the poster.  I knew it would look so good all framed up but I also knew that there ….

Take A Seat

posted on

I’m often asked… WHY?  Why in the world don’t you hire someone to finish up this house of yours?  Good grief, that’s an excellent question and my usual answer is … well, because there’s lots of stuff I can do myself and hiring someone is not only expensive but a nightmare.  (we’ve all been there!)  NIGHTMARE!  But this post is about another reason we do it all ourselves.

The thing is that I’m not a rich person.  I make a good living and so does my husband… but we are not wealthy people.  We have beautiful things that we’ve worked very ….

Office Party!

posted on

I definitely think it’s true that “small” spaces are the hardest.  I know it seems like I’ve been working in the office for like FOR-EV-ER (gag me with a spoon). Honestly the truth is … I HAVE BEEN.  I’ve also been helping Richie with the staining of the outside siding.  Which is going fabulous by the way.

But lets wrap up this space before I stab myself with a pair of scissors.   I don’t know about you but when I’m done with a project I’m DONE with it.  Well, for a while at least.  Ha Ha!

The office is a tiny ….

The Grass is Greener on the Sides

posted on

The west and east sides of the house have been getting some much needed attention over the last two weeks and Richie continues to repair, caulk, sand, and paint the outside of the house.  He also managed to finish laying down the last of the sod needed to complete the yard.

Every do-it-yourselfer who is renovating their homes (or at least the ones I’ve had the privilege to meet) deals with time restraints, money issues, weather delays, and physical exhaustion.  All of which make doing projects in little blocks a necessity.  We got a great start to the outside of the ….

Office Details – After Midnight

posted on

The work continues in our little office and I’m starting to see the finish line.   Although there are still many OFFICE posts to come and lots left to do… here’s some record keeping.

Over the weekend I decided to focus in on some little things that required some creativity.  Most of it I come up with around midnight when I’m trying to settle my brain down and get to sleep.  It rarely works because that’s usually the time I go crazy with thoughts regarding my next insane TIME SUCKING project.

So after many late night ideas this week I woke up ….

Window Wars

posted on

I’m at war… with the sun!  I love you shiny sun.  I love how you brighten my life and my home… but you’re starting to get me HOT….  and not in a way my husband would enjoy.

What I’m about to say is NOT a complaint because having a home with floor to ceiling windows is really special, but it has and continues to be a real challenge.  You have this amazing view to the outside world that makes you feel like you’re never “stuck inside”.  You watch the birds, the rain, the squirrels (who eat your tomatoes out of the ….

The Seven Best Home Renovation Blogs

posted on

I’ve been keeping this a secret for a couple weeks but I’m super thrilled to share it with you because… well… it’s just so nice when someone contacts you and enjoys what you’re doing and finds your blog and the content something worth sharing.  I’m so pleased!

It started with an email form MSN’s glow.com.  Let me just say that I get a lot of emails through my contact page that quickly get deleted.  This particular email seemed “real” and the person writing it seemed legit and very lovely (you know… you just get that feeling) and for some reason I ….

Office Work

posted on

It’s time to get back on track with my postings here. My whole reason for starting this blog was to keep a “journal”, if you will, of all the projects we complete big or small. Having a record of all the work we’ve done over the past 4 years is incredibly motivating to us… and it helps us realize how grateful we are to have this opportunity and just how far we’ve come. Unfortunately I have NOT been keeping up well with things and that makes it ten times more difficult to get going again. I’m just going to START ….

Blog Surprise

posted on

A quick little post just because I’ve been away from the blog world and the internet in general.  Strange thing about that is when you come back you get sweet surprises!  I love surprises!

A quick visit to the Modernica blog recently led me to this:

It seems that on May 28th A Goode House was featured on the Modernica blog.  How nice is that!
I thought so, anyway.  Thanks Modernica… for the shout out and the lovely items you provide for modern home owners.

It’s unfortunate that the pictures kinda suck but that’s totally my fault.  I should definitely update
the ….
