About

Hi and welcome!  My name is Stacey and my husband and I love modern design, and architecture and we’ve been collecting treasures and art for many many years.  We got lucky and bought this mid-century modern home in 2009 and are documenting our renovation highs and lows through this blog.  It came about after many requests from friends and family, both local and across the country, for pictures and info about our new home and the work we were dedicating ourselves to for the next 5 years.  (yes, we’re crazy, and yes, we’re overwhelmed!)

We have many interests besides renovation, and we’ll share those things too.  We both have full-time 9-5 jobs so finding time to work on this house is a challenge. We are fully committed!

We’ve been married for 23 years and we have each other trained quite well. My husband is a musician, (guitar, bass, piano, harmonica, and some drums) artist, teacher, and becoming a damn good carpenter. He can do just about anything he puts his mind to.

Blogging is most definitely NOT my full-time job.  I work for an NPR radio station.  My main responsibility is on-air fundraising but I wear many hats as I produce an arts calendar, contribute to music shows, I’m the station webmaster, and the official coffee maker and advice giver/staff counselor.  I love to sew, craft, make jewelry, and design/program websites on the side. Yes, I’m a geeky  Stacey on aircode writer!   I’m certainly NOT an interior designer or a photographer, although I love to see the work of other talented people who are lucky enough to do it for a living … and they inspire me to make my home as lovely as I can. Working on this blog has made me love using my camera and seeing things in new ways.

We are both obsessed with art, music, and estate sale finds.  Just about every piece in our home was either built by us, or found at an estate sale and many pieces refinished.  Our tastes vary, as we are not JUST about mid-century.  We love all old things, hand made things, rusty signs, and an “industrial” look.  I love many designs of “Today” and I try to mix the new with the old.  I think it keeps things fresh.

WHY THE GOOD(E) HOUSE?
Our mid-century Modern home was built in 1958 and owned by Rex and Ruth Goode. Rex was an architect who designed many well known buildings around Southeast Texas. He was also the resident architect at our local State University and was a generous supporter of the arts. Ruth was a piano teacher and taught lessons to kids all over the area. There were two baby grand pianos in the house and from what I’ve heard from so many it was always filled with kids, music, art, and fun. WE LOVE THAT!

Richie and I met the sweet couple in 2002 and exchanged our passions for arts, music, architecture and modern furniture. It was a lovely day and we never expected to one day own this amazing home. After their passing, we felt like it was an opportunity we couldn’t refuse. Today we feel honored to have the chance to repair this house and make it ours.

There won’t always be projects to display and impressive before and after pictures so I will also share my current obsessions, my love of art, my silly handmade projects, music, and anything else that pops into my head. I’ll have fun.

Hope you enjoy looking and thanks for visiting.  Please feel free to comment, send an email or follow the blog via email notices (see front page to sign up).  I love meeting new people.

Oh my goodness… I love what you are doing with your home and your blog! My husband and I have a very traditional home, but we’ve always talked about how cool it would be to have a mid-century modern place. Can’t wait to see what you guys are up to next! ~Danielle

Thanks for taking a look, Danielle. Mid-Century is our thing… but I love and appreciate ALL styles. It’s such a pleasure to see other people’s style, choices, collections, and hear their success stories in home ownership. I love your “feature story” section. I may have to send you something. :-)

Me too, thanks for looking Leena. You guys are doing some pretty incredible and very familiar stuff over at byebyebrooklyn. My husband built our guest bedroom bed, too. Oh how I wish I had been blogging years ago. It’s so fun to see all your amazing projects. Thanks for sharing them with us Lookie-Loos. You’re making your home magazine worthy. Just beautiful!

Very cool! I just found about some crazy small world history on our house! I’m so excited about knowing about our house and I think it’s awesome when people know the story behind their homes.

I agree. For some reason it makes me think more carefully with the decisions I make because I knew the architect and many of his friends.. who to this day keep up with what we are doing. I know so much history that I feel I have a responsibility to do good. Silly?

Well, if you had asked me 2 years ago… I would have handed you the keys and said “good luck”… but this week we celebrate 3 years of working on this place so I better see it through to completion. Sorry… but I’ll share it with you. HA HA!
Whoever you are… I thank you… that was so sweet. (I’m smiling)

I just burst out in smile! And I have one of those smiles that takes over a persons entire face… where all their teeth (even the very back ones) show!!! You are awesome!!! I’m so happy to have a new sister.
I did get a chance to visit yours and follow (FINALLY!) and I love everything about it! Those cactus pix are amazing… but I have one complaint… I can’t leave a comment!!! I’m a comment writing crazy person. I can only assume that is on purpose. ???? But I wanted to leave you some blog love… then thought maybe I was doing something wrong. (I’m your sister so you should know that I’m dense sometimes). Anyway, I’m glad we met and we’ll have lots of fun! Thanks again.

P.S. I have to know your first name… since we’re sisters.

I love your style, your photos, and your posts. I’m more of a traditional girl style wise, but I like to throw in some funky elements and maybe a little pop of color to keep it interesting. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Erin! So cool of you to say so. Funky always works for us and traditional is always classy. We weren’t always mid-century modern… it just sort of evolved over time and we went with it!
Thanks for looking at our mess… if it inspires anyone I’m always surprised and completely thrilled. Glad to have you here!

Oh goodness.. thank you for visiting! Not many people I run in to want concrete so I LOVE that you guys do too. We got so lucky (in a weird way) that the concrete was already stained when the house was built in 1958. Talk about “hip” people… way back then. The stain was actually added to the final pour of the cement so it goes down about 1/4 inch into the concrete. I would love if it was a light to medium gray but we’re stuck with brown. Oh well, I try not to worry about it and just enjoy the ease of having it. All we had to do was just strip the old wax, clean the floors, reseal and then re-wax. I’m kind of doing it room by room as we go.
Thank you so much for asking! You guys have a wonderful home and I love your style and what you’re doing. It’s never ending working on a house… but we really enjoy it. I’m sure you feel the same. :-)

My husband and I just bought our first house, and it’s a MCM. We love it so much, and can’t imagine living anywhere else! Like your house, ours needs some love too, and we are in the process of slowly redoing it. We also thought it would be fun to start a blog to share our progress with friends and family. It’s JJModern.com, and I am so inspired by your site and seeing all of your progress!

Hey Jennifer! Great to meet you… and thanks for the visit! YOUR HOUSE IS AMAZING! Love everything about it. There’s so much potential (in both our houses) and to have the chance to fix it and make it yours is a gift. I always feel really lucky (and totally overwhelmed too) to have our place. It’s not something we planned… it just sort of happened.
I love that you’re doing the same thing. You guys are totally rockin’ with the updates…. I LOVE IT! All those windows…. geez… can you imagine living in a home without them. I always forget that most people don’t have WALLS of window so when I go to someone else’s house I’m like “why is it so dark in here”? HA HA! It’s great you’re blogging about it too. I really wish I had the energy in the beginning to document all the crazy shit we did. Sometimes I’m amazed that we’re still alive and still speaking to each other. (giggle)
I’ll stay in touch and keep up with your progress. I’m so glad you left a comment. It’s great meeting like-minded people working so hard for the same things. LOVE IT!

Hi Stacey! Your blog is so fun to read and I am drooling over the updates you have made to your fabulous home! I commend you for the work you have put in over the past several years, and you must be so proud of the results! I am a complete newbie in terms of whole house renovation and blogging…. It’s a challenge I am very happy to have put on myself, and I know I will grow creatively with the experience…There is so much to learn and explore, and I will continue to follow a goode house for inspiration!

Hey Allison! I’m so happy you stopped by. It’s a quirky little place isn’t it? The architect was also an artist and I’d have to say that this house was his “art” in many ways. It’s not a highly polished fancy mid-century home.. but it totally works for us. It has been a challenge in so many ways and we still have so far to go. Everything is so dang expensive so we had to do most of the work ourselves and save the other stuff for professionals. The roof was a doozie! I never knew a roof could cost 5 figures. HOLY COW! I certainly hope it lasts a LONG TIME! Seriously, though I so enjoy seeing others working so hard to save these special homes. So many times people just don’t know what to do with them and they get destroyed or made into something the era doesn’t support. It’s so great to find you and see you’re one of the lucky ones who is doing it well and doing it right. Thanks again, I’d love it if you check on us from time to time!

What have been your major challenges? Any regrets?

Hi Amanda! I’m so sorry for the delay with this reply. My “real” job has been keeping me from my blog and I hate that. I’m hoping to get back to posting soon!
Thanks so much for finding me and leaving a comment. I’m so happy to meet you!
Challenges?…. there are so many… but we work through each one. I think what challenges us the most is just finding the time to work on the house. With full-time jobs it seems like we take 2 steps forward and one step back. I could really use a work crew of about 30 people for about a week. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! (I’ll keep dreaming).
Regrets?…. somedays I regret buying the house at all and disrupting our lives in a way that has been more stressful than I feel I can handle sometimes. But then it passes and I feel no regret at all. I guess it depends on how darn frustrated and tired I am that day. :-) I guess any DIY home renovator can relate to that. Looking forward to visiting you too. Thank you again!
