super moon.. really was

posted on

I hope you all got a chance to look up in the sky this evening and see the beautiful “Super Moon”. Of course all the hype had me waiting anxiously to see the big glowing sky but really it would have been hard to miss.

It was almost impossible to not notice, as our entire house was flooded with moonlight and the glow was just beautiful. I could see the moon through the trees outside our bedroom window and grabbed my camera to TRY to get some shots.

Super moon through trees

Obviously I’m a total and complete amateur because I don’t even own a tripod (add to list!) and this kind of shot pretty much demands one… but I had to try. They turned out pretty good so I thought I’d share.

Super Moon

The perigee full moon on May 5, 2012 will be as much as 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons of 2012. ‘Supermoon’ is a situation when the moon is slightly closer to Earth in its orbit than on average, and this effect is most noticeable when it occurs at the same time as a full moon. So, the moon may seem bigger although the difference in its distance from Earth is only a few percent at such times.

It is called a supermoon because this is a very noticeable alignment that at first glance would seem to have an effect. The ‘super’ in supermoon is really just the appearance of being closer, but unless we were measuring the Earth-Moon distance by laser rangefinders, there is really no difference.

Oh good! I’m glad you got to experience it. It really wasn’t that different to the naked eye but being so close made it just appear that way. I love watching the moon so it was fun to see. The skies were really clear here in Texas so it lit us up so good!

Oh how embarrassing speaking to a pro…
It’s just a Canon PowerShot with built in 35x Optical Zoom. It’s not SLR but it does allow for manual setting… so I’m learning. I have to admit, I love to ZOOM!
Thanks for looking. It was fun to capture and I can’t lie, I was sort of freaking out that they turned out as good as they did. :-)

Haha, I’m still a student with A LOT to learn and won’t technically be a pro until I finish four classes…getting close! One thing I’ve learned from photography school is that experience and just getting out there and shooting is the absolute best way to learn. Let me tell you, my favorite camera was a Sony Cybershot, and it wasn’t SLR, but the lens was incredible. The lens can make ALL the difference! Yes, I love to zoom too, and that is something I’m missing right now. Like you, I love to shoot nature, birds, etc.. and I can’t do it effectively without a decent zoom. It’s on my wish list! Keep the great shots coming, my friend!

I’m really enjoying taking pictures more and more. But really… it’s all technology making it easier for dreamers like me. Thank you for saying so. You’re always so sweet!
      P.S. I didn’t get a chance to comment… but I will. I LOVE YOUR BENCH.

Those are gorgeous pictures, Stacey, especially with the moon behind the lacy leaves.

Do you know if the term ” super ”
moon is new? I had not heard that before.

Hey Polly. Did you SEE IT? No, I haven’t heard that term “super” before but they’ve (media) been talking about it all week so it was fun learning something new. I didn’t want to miss it. I’ve sort of become fascinated by the night sky thanks to all the windows in the house. There’s a lot of action going on at night that I would otherwise miss. I can lay in bed and see the moon and stars so it’s dreamy! We turned out all the lights in the house and it was pouring in. I’m such a dork. LOVE stuff like that. Thank you for taking a minute to look. :-)
