Let There Be Light

posted on

We’re getting closer and closer to finishing our bedroom and I’m starting to gather some of the things I’ll need to pull it all together. I got the rug delivered and now it was time to do my part for the economy and spend a little cash on some bedroom reading lamps. Richie calls me the queen of tight wads and…. well, I’ll take that as a compliment, thank you! I admit, I hold on tight to my money and I’m NOT a frivolous spender. HOWEVER, saving your money and buying things that will bring you years of enjoyment is never a problem for me.

I went ahead and purchased two Artemide Tolomeo Micro wall lamps for the sides of the bed. Just about every place you order these you have to wait 3-4 weeks for delivery so I figured I’d get the ball rolling and maybe by the time they get here I’ll be closer to done. (whatever “done” means).

There are certain lamps that will forever be “classics”… like… the nelson bubble lamps. Everyone knows about those. I believe that the Artemide Tolomeo line will one day be in that list of classics. I just feel they are exceptional. Okay, maybe I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, but it will be on my list for sure.

We bought our first Tolomeo floor lamp about 6 years ago and it was of the best purchases we ever made. It’s VERY tall and stretches WAY out so you can use it in just about any setting.

Here it is in our living room and provides not only great light for reading and sitting in that chair, but it’s high enough that it provides great light for the room in general. It also comes with a dimmer control which is awesome.

Note: I get questions about the mural and I promise I will be doing a post on that soon. Crazy and colorful, isn’t it.

I found this lovely photo online yesterday and it’s almost exactly as ours will look. We have floating tables on the sides of our bed too. I can’t wait. I think this bedroom is so lovely and calm.

The line has so many variations. Check this ceiling version. So cool and unexpected.

We definitely have an obsession for lamps. The real irony is that in this house you really can’t put them anywhere. It’s a hoot! There are so many walls of windows that we’re very limited on actual wall space.. which houses electrical outlets. My husband is dying for a Jielde lamp and keeps after me to get one but I have no idea where we’d put it.

I guess if you’re working that hard to figure it out where you’d put it … you probably don’t need one. He’d just say I’m a tight-wad.
HA HA!

What is the bedroom rug like?

I feel so proud of myself— I cut a picture of a lamp I liked , from an Australian design magazine and guess what? It is the same one you have, the Tolomeo floor lamp! I picked the same one a pro like you , with such good taste , chose. Now, affording it is another thing. I have noticed that while so much mid- century modern furniture has very graceful lines, a lot of the lamps look clunky— at least to me. Sounds like your bedroom project is going well!

You make me smile, girl! Always so complimentary. It really is the most amazing lamp and no, it’s not something you just run out and buy on a whim. I have a list of things I really and truly want and I save my money. Our dining room table was on our list for 8 years. We finally bought it in 2010. Save your money and buy it when you can…YOU WON’T REGRET IT! It would be so perfect in your condo. Like you, I love mid-century modern but once you get too clunky or kitschy you lose me. The rug was that black and white stripe from Crate and Barrel I showed in a previous post. I hope it works.
P.S. Let me know how your projects are going.

Oh, I want! Our bedroom is so small that we can only fit one end table, and it’s on my hubby’s side. So, there’s been many nights I have to get outta bed and walk around to turn off the lamp on the table after reading. I should get something like this for my side of the bed!

I’m so excited to have a nice sized bedroom for a change…. EEEEE a king size bed to come soon. We both like to read at night so the lights will be great.
      Thanks.

Thank you Chris. I’m sure that day will come. And when it does you’ll have all that beautiful art of yours to hang and display. Thanks for checkin’ it out!

Hi Emily. Thanks for visiting and the nice comment has made my day! Moving from a 1920’s house with wood floors and beautiful trim to THIS was a big change. It’s a whole different animal and I question my choices all the time. So thank you so much for being so sweet.

Man, a good light is hard to find! I’ve been searching for attractive and functional lighting for my crafting table. Any recommendations? (also, the chairs around the table are AWESOME).

You are so right! I’m happy this was an easy decision. You really stumped me on that one. Crafting demands really great light so I’m “in the dark”‘ on what to recommend. I struggle with that at my own crafting table. If I find something I’ll let you know…. please do the same. Love all your handmade stuff…. glad I found your blog. Thanks for stopping by!

I love that you snooped, you’re my favorite “snooper”! But I guess you’ve realized by now that I haven’t done a mural post. I’ve been asked by several people about it and I promise I WILL do one.. but it’s complicated. I want to do it right, because there’s more to the story than just the mural. It’s all twisted and intertwined around our lives. (I’m probably over thinking it!) I’ll work on that real soon. Thank you for always being so complimentary about our crazy house. You never know how people will respond when you open your life and home to the world… and then we you meet people like you … you’re always happy that you did!
