master bedroom update

Now that the kitchen is done we moved back into the master bedroom. We actually stopped all the work in this room when the kitchen project started to move so fast. Once we found a carpenter everything took off and the bedroom was abandoned. I’m definitely ready to get back to it. So here we go….

We’ll start with a quick “update” and reminder of where we were and what we’ve done.
The dark wood tongue and groove ceilings got cleaned and stained. The nice opaque stain really brightened the space. You may remember this post. >>>> Click Here.

The walls of this room have been patiently waiting for my attention and care as we worked on the rest of the house. Here’s a brief “history”…

new wall progress

The bedroom had two large closets and they just sucked up all the space in this room so we removed one (as seen above). It made a HUGE difference in the size of the room. The paneling was taken out and the electrical was all updated. WHAT A MESSY TIME THAT WAS! YUCK! and DOUBLE YUCK!

Ater sanding all the joints of the sheetrock I decided to go ahead and lightly texture the walls. I love a “smooth” wall but they are hard to maintain and the light texture really helps to hide blemishes and protects the rock. I stamp the wall using a “crows foot” sheetrock stamper. They’re available at just about any hardware store.

The secret is to get the mud as thin as pourable pancake batter. You have to water it down quite a bit and just go for it!

Here’s a very “shaky” video of me doing a little bit. STOMP AWAY!

a view after texture was applied….

So now the walls are looking so much better and have a coat of primer on to seal the texture. I’m waiting to decide if I’m going to paint any “color” on the walls or just white. Decisions, decisions. The beams and woodwork are all getting cleaned and a nice coat of stain is totally changing the look. It’s amazing what it does for the room.

The finished walls, white ceiling, and stained beams makes it feel like there’s hope!

Now we turn to the closet with a little reminder of where we were before the kitchen project….

The closet was gutted and we hung sheetrock on the walls. We cut down some old screen doors and used them on the fronts. I will re-stain and re-paper them later.

Closet Progress

Richie is here looking distressed… thanks to me! Just kidding. He’s just wiping his eyes (probably from crying!). Once he started on my shoe shelves I realized it needed to be moved to the center of the closet but the light was in the center (see pix above), so Richie took out the light and ran new electrical to have two lights instead of one… on either side of the shelf unit. He never complained once!

Closet

He’s only just beginning but I took this picture to show where we’re headed with this. They are adjustable “peg” shelves that go from ceiling to floor and will have about 10 shelves that will hold all my shoes, handbags, and whatever else. I hate my shoes being on the floor and a girls just LOVES her shoes!

It’s a long convoluted post that seems to be all over the place but I just couldn’t go forward without going back a little. Bottom line is that we are back in the room and working it out. Now that holiday vacation is over it will mostly be weekend work but I’ll post as we move along. I’m happy to just see the walls finished. It makes me SMILE!
