One Picket at a Time

Work on the front fence and gate continues….

Now that the front fence and gate are pretty well done, it was time to set new posts for the redesigned fence. Most of the fence was setting above ground on concrete blocks, which was really great, but we decided to go ahead and dig holes and do it the “standard” way. Here you can see the new poles as they set up. Now we have to play the waiting game…… Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock.  Only time will cure that crete!

While that dries I lend a hand and help Richie remove the rest of the fence. We left the old fence up and tried to work around it because if we tore it all down at once it would have left the house so exposed and we sure didn’t want that! So it all happened in small steps. See (below) how wonderful it all looks when it’s down. A nice new palette to create our fence.

The picture above shows a view from behind that front fence and the new gate.

Richie works it all out in his head!

A new day brings dry concrete and the fun part begins. HA HA! I can say fun part because I’m not having to do it, huh. (sorry Richie!) He’s working his tail off!! (meanwhile… my tail is still healing).  Thanks to Dean (his father) the guys make amazing progress!

The part you see without pickets in front of the a/c compressor is getting a gate so we can access the unit.  There was no way to access it before and when we got the new a/c the techs had to literally lift that sucker up and over the fence.  It took three of them to do it.  I felt so bad… but they were young and didn’t seem to even care.  (ahhh, to be young!)
The new gate will fix all that.

Another view of the sliding gate and back of the fence.  The back of the fence will soon get a “front” so we’ll have a pretty side to look at in the courtyard.

The front of the house is now sealed up and looks so much better.  Here’s a view below. That pile of boards is a new pile.  Richie had already cleaned the other pile up and sorted through making two trips to the landfill.  We saved every piece we could so we can reuse it on his shop when we get to that project.

Some might ask “why the inserted space” in the fence line?  Well, good question.
First, you have to have a little space for the sliding gate to push to.  Also, the gas meter is right near the a/c unit and must be accessible to the meter readers… so the little nook was and still is necessary.  We already have plans to make it look lovely with some greenery.

So there it is.  More progress but probably another 3 days of work to go.  We have to finish the pickets, build and install the a/c unit gate, trim everything out, and secure the sliding gate.  Hopefully we’ll be done with everything by Sunday.  We’re really happy with it.
