Back to Work

Home renovation sure isn’t for sissies! It’s back to work for the “crew of two”. My work is pretty low-key because my left arm is still out of wack. The x-rays were inconclusive and had to be sent off to a radiologist. It’s either a dislocation or I have “funky bones”. If it’s funky bones, then it’s a damaged tendon. Either way it’s light work for me… and messy hard work for Richie.

Richie started working on the support beams at the back of the house. Each beam had to be taken apart, repaired and a new cap was put on the front and bottoms of the beams. Some of them went fine… others had their challenges. (who’s kidding who, it sucked!)

He started on the left side and worked his way down. You can see how the beams look without caps and then how much better down the house they look when they’re finished. All went well… until we got to the beam outside the bathroom…..

The bathroom had a old vent (that did absolutely NOTHING!) and it had to be taken out.
It was right next to that beam and couldn’t be ignored. All the duct work had to be removed as well. Nice hole in the house! But as you see, Richie made it look as if nothing ever happened. We saved and reused so much wood from other tear out projects and it really comes in handy. A new hole will have to be cut once we get our NEW vents in.

The right side of the house was the part that presented real challenges. See it all…

The third and fourth beam in the top picture above had terrible rot. It was either from the hurricane damage or from the old porch that use to be attached to these beams. Luckily we tore that porch down, cut all the trees, and got a new roof.. so I doubt we’ll have future problems. You can see the damage and then Richie cutting out the bad spots and finally sistering in new sections. I love the 2×4 and clamps that had to be place there to hold the roof up while he removed the beams. (he’s so smart!) It’s getting done.

Once it’s all caulked, puttied, and stained, you’ll never know it was ever rotten and replaced. Can’t wait for those pictures.

While he played “SUPER carpenter”, I took down the last three panels from the hallway and primed and painted them. I’m so ready to get done with this hallway. Enough is enough! Who else has a 60 foot hallway. Crazy!!!! Almost done.

Picture shows the last three panels down and how important this space is. It houses all the electrical, duct work, cable, phone, lights, etc. Once it’s all sealed up the hall will look pretty darn good. One day at a time.
